San Francisco International Comedy Competition

What it is
One of the most prestigious comedy competitions in the country. 30 comedians invited out of 100's who audition or apply. Previous finalist in this event have gone on to become household names in comedy – Robin Williams, Dana Carvey, Ellen DeGeneres, Dane Cook, Rob Schneider, Kevin Pollack, Sinbad, Patton Oswald, Rob Becker, Marsha Warfield, Mark Curry, Will Durst, Bobby Slayton and Jake Johannsen to name a few. If you’re a fan of Last Comic Standing, Gerry Dee    (one of the current final 4) won this event in 2002. Roseann Barr, Janeane Garofalo, Steven Wright, Bobcat Goldthwait, Christopher Titus and DL Hughly all competed, but never made it to the finals.

How it Works
The competition stretches over 3 rounds, 4 weeks, 17 performanes and 16 different venues. 30 comedians start in two preliminary rounds each involving
6 performances at 6 different venues. Top 5 from each prelim (10 total) move on to the semi-finals and compete in 6 more venues. Top 5 from the semi-finals move to the finals involving 5 more performances. Each nights' performers are judged by 3-4 different judges based on 7 criteria including delivery, material, stage presence, technique, audience response and audience rapport. Perfect score is an 11.0. Scores roll up from night to night throughout the round to determine who moves forward. Although audience does not vote via ballot, at the end of each performance they determine whether a performer is awarded an 'ovation' point by applause. It's impossible to get into the top 5 without the ovation point.  Set length varies with each round - preliminaries 5-7 minutes, semi-finals 10-12 minutes and finals 15-20 minutes. Prize money $30,000.
